negro what?!?!

so i was sitting down with my cousin today and she was filling out the 2010 census when we got down to question number 9 and the it read:

what is person 1's race:
☾☽ white
☾☽ black, african am., or negro
☾☽ american indian or alaska native

NEGRO ?!?!?! what the heck! really?!
when i seen this i was appalled, to say i was shock and disgusted is an understatement. and in a way i was hurt, i was hurt because the united states of america is supposed to be the land of the brave and the free, the land of opportunity and "equality" its 2010 a black man is president and they have the nerve, no scratch that, the audacity to refer to black people as negroes. in a place where millions of people migrate every year, we are supposed to be considered a "melting pot" and you are going to call me a fricking negro. do you not see anything wrong with that? excuse me for my language and questions my patriotism all you want but FUCK AMERICA..FUCK THE GOVERNMENT. FUCK EM ALL.. and i say it with so much emphases. how dare you calling me a fucking negro. black i am. but i am no bodies negro. not now not ever. my ancestors did not endure all that they did for me to be considered a negro in 2010. so you couldnt win the white house so im guessing yall taking cheap shots now. is that what it is?!?! im still going to fill out the census because im not too mad to the point where i will play dumb, but better believe i am writing a letter to the president, congress and im writing to al sharpton and michael basden to draw attention to this because this is ridiculous. if they are going to refer to the black race as negros why the fuck they aint put red necks or cracker next to white?
OBAMA SHOULD OF REALLY CHECKED THIS CENSUS BEFORE IT WAS SENT OUT!!!!

I'm not sure what to make of this... The term "negro" has had different meanings attached to it. I mean the black race is technically referred to as "negroid" in the same way white people are "caucasoid" so it is not necessarily an insultive term. Words are all about the energy they portray. If a rapper said the N word, it would not be seen as racist, yet the tone with which a bigot can say "black people" could convey all the hate and racism in the world... In this case, I think "negro" is used in the historical context- the same way we say "black" now. The Census Bureau themselves said they included it because older generations still identify with the term. Not everything is an attempt to attack us.

i understand all that but it still does not make it acceptable. the term "black" would have been enough

i don't really see what's so offensive about the word "negro" now if it was something very similar to that word i would be extremely shocked and appalled. over time people changed its meaning and turned it into a more offensive word which i choose not to say! as "F" said above some people refer to white people as "caucasoids". it's not offensive.

if anything i think the word "INDIAN" is far more offensive. referring to them as first nations or aboriginals would have been more adequate.

"F" said it best. When it was put down on the census it was never meant to offend. I have taken a race and ethnicity class when i was doing my undergrad and it was taught from a black professor that made it very insightful as he broke it down. Negroid, Caucasoid, and Mongoloids date back many years and these were the only 3 races that were accounted for. Everyone fit in one of the three. Now that we are completing this census we are seeing that culturally as a society things are changes hence the labels. I do not thing its a bad thing to use the term "negro" for we as the people have decided that we find it to be derogatory because thats how we sometimes refer to our own kind when they do something foolish. great post thought girl! keep writing! bless

OMG I saw that and was like WTF ... And I was also wondering about why there were so many choices for our spanish speaking invaders ... I guess they were thinking of the illegal immigrants as well.

OMG i almost did a post on this .. but i forgot.. im glad you did though.

I had ill feelings about this at first but then I brought it up to someone whom I look up to and they explained it similar to "i love muzik"

so it took away my anger because sometimes we must see things from the eyes/hand in which it comes from and if this was something printed for the world, i'm sure it wouldnt have been meant to offend.

I agree with F! When I first saw it on the Census i was sumwhat like wtf...why would they put this on here. But I know black people who will only refer to us as Negroes themselves..so when asked what race they are they answer Negroe. Crazy..but very true. In their mind black and negroe are 2 completly diff playing fields. So the Census wasnt meant to offend anyone! It was to make sure EVERYone was included.
